Excel is an e-sport - and it has it's own theme tune!
The Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC), an annual competition that brings together the world's top spreadsheet experts, has found an unlikely, yet fitting, addition to its competitive flair: a dedicated rock-style theme song.
Released in late 2024, "The Excel World Championship Song" was created by our very own Giles Male with the help of AI. The song quickly became a talking point, adding a layer of humor and unique identity to the Excel e-sport". It's available on major streaming platforms like Spotify.
The song, a soft rock ballad style, leans into the self-aware humor of a highly competitive event focused on solving challenges in Excel. Its lyrics capture the tension and quirky spirit of the competition, with a memorable chorus that has become a fan favourite:
"It's the Excel World Championship / Who's going to win?
It's the Excel World Championship / Who's going in the spreadsheet bin?"
While a fun and unexpected element, the song is part of the MEWC organizers' broader effort to elevate competitive Excel into a more mainstream spectator event, complete with "are-you-ready-to-rumble" style announcers and a championship belt.
The electric crowd reaction and tens of thousands of YouTube livestream viewers suggest the approach is working, and the theme song has successfully cemented its place as a catchy and essential ingredient of the championship experience.
