Judges' Awards: The Winners

Huge congratulaions to these individuals and teams for winning the 2021 Judges' Awards.

Emerging Financial Modeller of the Year

There were many nominations worthy of an award in this category. In the end judges picked two winners:

Gabriel Mango. Gabriel single-handedly redesigned the tariff model for the Nigeria Energy Sector Industry (NESI) which has helped all market participants to better understand the electricity industry. Judges saw this as an outstanding acheivement so early in a career.

Tanja Hansar. Tanja has shown enormous technical development during her first two years at PwC after graduating from university. She has recently been promoted to Senior Associate due to her continued strong performance. Tanja continuously challenges the status quo and brings valuable ideas and impulses to her work.

Financial Modelling Team of the Year

This award was presented to Operis.

In 2020, Operis completed work on almost 30 mandates, and since the start of 2021, they have assisted on over 25 model development projects. The team continues to service the needs of their clients during these challenging times, where flexibility and adaptability have been key to success.

What also stood out in their nomination was the hard work Operis has put in to support its team through these difficult times.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award was presented to Liam Bastick.

Liam was part of the team that pioneered the use of the reverse ticker method for depreciation using SUMPRODUCT and OFFSET and wrote some of the first articles on the web on dynamic arrays, LET, LAMBDA, recursion and their use in Excel and financial modelling.

Liam is a 10x Microsoft Most Valuable Professional specialising in Excel, and the first among only a handful who have built their community reputation specifically in financial modelling.

Financial Modeller of the Year

This award was presented to Michael Jarman.

Michael is an exceptionally bright and gifted financial modeller despite his relative youth. In 2018, he became World Champion at ModelOff and remains the youngest winner ever. He pioneered a 'Dashboard' model a few years ago for asset management clients, which can automatically control a portfolio of Operis-built models to aggregate results and run sensitivities on them. Michael is now leading the development of a 'Master Controller' model to perform the same task on any financial models set.
