The latest episode of Unpivot is out, and they have a new outro.

Episode 39: Trolls, New Features and Common Data Problems

Hosts :Wyn Hopkins, Mark Proctor, Sue Bayes, and Giles Male

You can watch it here.

This week Wyn was accused by a TikTok troll of being made by AI. As you can see from the main picture, this definitely isn’t the case! Why does Giles have three hands? Probably to help him with his two pints! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

New features in Excel and PowerBI

The Unpivot team have a chat through some recent new features in Excel and PowerBI:

  • β€’    Visual Calcs in Dax (PowerBI) – User Defined Functions (UDFs) with Scalable Vector Graphics (SVGs)
  • β€’    Excel Agent mode will now be linked to CoPilot so no need for Labs add-in
  • β€’    Formula by example now in Excel desktop
  • β€’    Bing Map being deprecated in PowerBI – need to turn them into Azure maps
  • β€’    PowerBI controller in PowerPoint
  • β€’    Spill feature for Pivot Tables to replace the annoying overlap message (in beta insider version)

Question of the Week:   What are the most common data problems and how can we solve them

  • β€’   Free form text from an input form
  • β€’   Date formatting
  • β€’   Wrong, missing data, needs to be merged / split
  • β€’   Finding the data in the first place
  • β€’   Missing dates / other values
  • β€’   Lack of or lack of clarity of data definitions across departments
  • β€’   Disparate, messy data
  •

Some options for fixing them:

  • β€’  AI, Python & R
  • β€’  =COPILOT()
  • β€’  PowerQuery
  • β€’  Push back up the data flow to resolve at source and user behaviours etc
  • β€’  Data Validation at input
