A data visualisation reading list

I've long believed that the best way to learn something is to teach it. To increase my own knowledge and skill around data visualisation, I created this free introduction to data visualisation course. This week I published a reading list of books and websites that I drew upon to create the course. Useful for those who want to go beyond the free introduction.

The Merge

On Wednesday the cryptocurrency platform Ethereum completed a long awaited software upgrade known as the Merge. The upgrade is expected to reduce Ethereum’s energy consumption and set the stage for future improvements that will make the platform easier and cheaper to use. The Merge changes Etherium from a proof of work to a proof of stake approach. This change is expected to reduce energy consumption by 99.95%. To learn more about financial modelling for crypto, check out Roderick McKinley's session at the upcoming Financial Modelling Summit.

Patagonia and the purpose trust

This week Yvon Chouinard, the founder of clothing maker Patagonia, has transferred the voting stock (representing 2% of the company's value) of this $3 billion company to a "purpose trust". The non-voting stock (representing 98% of the company's value) that receives the company's annual profits worth $100 million is transferred to a private foundation. This structure was decided upon as the best way of meeting Chouinard’s objectives, which include worker well-being and climate action. Read more about what a Purpose trust is and how it works.

And finally... The Queue

The British have marked the passing of their Monarch by doing what they do best, forming an enormous queue. The current waiting time in The Queue, which stretches along the South Bank of the River Thames, is more than 12 hours. Richard Parry on Twitter posted this suggestion to help speed things up.
