The Modeller’s Miscellany #128
"People have vastly different desires, except for three things: Respect, feeling useful, and control over their time. Those are nearly universal." - Morgan Housel

Economics
Why banks fail
The 2022 Nobel Prize for Economics went to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig for their work on banking and financial crises. Their model explains why banks collapse and the impact on the wider economy. Given global financial headwinds, this is very relevant work. This article gives a good overview.
Modelling
Direct vs indirect cashflow
Come on. This is exactly the reading you need on a Sunday. Quite a few modellers, especially those who don't come from an accounting background, are sketchy on the difference between a direct and an indirect cashflow. Mark Robson from Grant Thornton breaks it down in this article.
Visualisation & Communication
Presentation standards
Imagine if every composer from Mozart to Gershwin used a different notation system. How would musicians be able to interpret the music quickly? Yet in business, there is a plethora of ways to layout reports, even within a single company. Project Finance Institute is running a webinar on November 22nd on International Business Communication Standards. It sounds dry but if you have to produce any kind of written communication, you want to know this stuff. IBCS are leading the way to faster, better, and less-costly results in all stages of business communications and decision-making processes. The webinar is titled Solid, Outlined, Hatched - in reference to the IBCS book of the same name.
Work
Why psychological safety is important in financial modelling
When people on a team have a feeling of psychological safety, they feel able to ask for help, admit mistakes, raise concerns, suggest ideas, and challenge ways of working and the ideas of others on the team, including (critically!) the ideas of those in authority. This is a must if you want your team to be open about mistakes and learn from them. If you're looking for resources on how to increase the level of psychological safety on your team, these guys have got your back.
