The Modeller’s Miscellany #139

Financial Modelling Mastermind Group
Last week I posted an idea on LinkedIn. I wanted to explore whether experienced professional modellers were interested in creating a space to come together and share ideas, best practices, experiences, and issues. To learn from each other. Not a place to learn modelling; there are lots of resources for that already. But a place to develop further if you're already the go-to modeller on your team. I received a lot of interest from some incredible modellers. If you're an experienced modeller and this sounds like the kind of group you've been looking for, let me know.
Excel
VBA is alive and kicking
George Lungu, a circuit designer by day and VBA demi-god by night, blew the audience away earlier this week at the Global Excel Summit. George left a crowd of experienced modellers and Microsoft MVPs with their jaws on the floor throughout his 45-minute presentation. He uses Excel 2003 and a bit of "simple" VBA to create full projections and animations of orbiting planets, flight simulators with active joystick controls, arcade games, rollercoaster ride simulators, and much more. George, we salute you. Check out his work.

SUMPRODUCT is dead. Long live SUMPRODUCT
This week I caught this video from Wyn Hopkins. His position is that Dynamic Arrays mean that SUMPRODUCT is no longer necessary, and he asks if it will join VLOOKUP in the list of functions our future colleagues will never use. I'm not convinced. Decide for yourself.

What finance professionals need to know about strategy
Mohamed El Rouby is posting a multi-part series on LinkedIn looking at what finance professionals need to know about strategy. In this post, he shares a helpful framework to help you determine how to manage stakeholders depending on their influence and level of interest. I found it useful, and I always love a good two by two matrix.
