Facebook plans to change its name to focus on the metaverse

According to this report in the Verge, Facebook is planning to change its company name next week to reflect its focus on building the metaverse. Facebook has already announced that it’s hiring 10,000 people in Europe to focus on its metaverse projects. Read more.

It’s long been known that not all acquisitions create value. PwC recently examined 800 deals including the 50 largest acquisitions across 16 different sectors completed over the past decade. They found that capabilities play a pivotal role in successful M&A activities fit between the buyer and target. Read more.


Researchers are hooking up trees to Twitter

In July 2018, a century-old red oak went live on Twitter. The account @awitnesstree introduces itself in its bio as “Witnessing life as a tree in a changing environment for more than a century. Views are my own – sort of (data translated by scientists and communicators at HF).” The tree’s messages are based on data from a suite of sensors on and around its trunk which tell us how the tree is affected by changes in its immediate environment. Read more.
