Your worst year ever
Let’s face it, the last two years haven’t been great. They might even rank amongst the worst in your life. If they don’t, you could probably quickly name the years that did.
But what about the worst year ever to be a human on this planet? How do you even define that? In absolute terms? Relative to what could reasonably be expected at the time? The continually excellent podcast Radiolab has answers — they make 2020 and 2021 look pretty good in comparison.
Three ways to be more rational this year
Steven Pinker is a Professor of Psychology at Harvard. He’s the author of Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters. He’s also the host of the BBC series Think with Pinker. For an intro to his work check out this short article on three ways to be more rational this year.
Negotiators should decrease concessions across rounds
Decreasing concessions over several rounds of negotiation is a strategy taught in business schools. This research from INSEAD is the first to back it up with data. When applied to zero-sum negotiations, gradually reducing concessions allows you to secure a bigger slice of the pie as it signals your bottom line. In a supplementary study, the same researchers showed that clearly labelling your final offer as your “bottom line” strengthened the effect. Read more.
