MEWC UK on the BBC
Giles and I were interviewed by the BBC South West team about the UK Excel Esport scene
"I didn't know you could have so much fun with a Spreadsheet"
The BBC also published an accompanying article which you can read here.
Who doesn't want to be the spreadsheet champion?
I am writing this post sat in my hotel room in Las Vegas where I am attending the finals of the Microsoft Excel World Cup championship, excited to see who will lift the belt this year.
So it was great to see that back home in the UK Giles and I were on the TV talking about the UK chapter of the Excel Esport.
It was a lovely sunny day back in September when Giles and I met Jasmine Ketibuah-Foley from BBC South West in Central Bristol.
Jasmine had heard about the finals of the Microsoft Excel World Cup UK Esport championship back in September and wanted to talk to us about it. We chatted to Jasmine for about an hour with the camera man taking various angles and backshots. It was really interesting to see how it all worked behind the scenes.
Jasmine also joined me at the Bristol Excel Meetup and interviewed some over the members there.
Amusingly the camera man made a point of telling us that he was dreading the job because he thought it was going to be an incredibly dull interview, but actually really enjoyed in. Praise indeed!
Here is the link to a shorter version of the interview.
Excel Esports are fun and accessible to everyone
Excel Esports are a competitive tournament where participants solve complex data and logic puzzles within a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet. Competitors have 30 minutes to solve the challenges, which are typically spread over seven levels, increasing in difficultly. The highest score wins.
The sport tests speed, accuracy, and creative problem-solving, turning Excel into a genuinely thrilling spectator event.
